Jobs in the Indian Railways are among the most sought-after jobs in India. This is because these Government jobs offer many benefits, including medical, and in certain posts, even Government accommodation at the place of posting.

Another attraction of Indian Railway is the range of jobs available, even for those without higher educational qualifications. Hence there are jobs for 10+2 passed candidates and also simple skill-based jobs that require the candidate to pass the proficiency test needed for that particular skill.

How to prepare to get selected in a job in the Indian Railways? Here are certain answers to go about it.

Where to search for jobs in Indian Railways?

The print media, especially the newspaper still remains as the traditional means to search for jobs. Your local newspaper often runs job notifications that are issued by the Indian Railway Recruitment Board. The job ad could appear on any day of the week. Other types of print media include the Employment Newspaper, which is solely devoted for jobs.

However, the Internet is widely becoming an obvious place to look for jobs. There are many job portals, many of which are focused solely on Government jobs. One of the popular job portals is that has a wide database of Government jobs, including job vacancies in the railways.

The Indian Railways has its own official recruitment site, namely the Railways Recruitment Board (RRB) website. One will come across various job vacancies that are available in the different organizations of the railways.

How does the Railways Recruitment Board select candidates?

A specific selection process is followed for selecting candidates to the various job vacancies, and most of the times it includes a written exam. The written exam aims to test the eligibility of the candidates for the following selection rounds. These are a viva by a panel and a skill-based test. Finally, there is a medical fitness exam to ensure the candidate’s medical fitness for the respective job.

It should however be noted that not all candidates applying for the job are called for the written exam. After a thorough screening of all the applications, only candidates meeting all the criteria are called for the written exam. The eligible candidates for the exam are informed through postal mail or email (as may be the case) a month before the actual date of the exam. Hence, it is important to fill in the details correctly and completely in the application form.

Is the job application to be made online?

In most of the cases when applying for a railway job, you first need to take a printout of the application form, fill in the details and send it to the address mentioned along with a Demand Draft by postal mail. (Please be informed that the photograph attached to the call letter and that attached on the application form should be exactly the same).
